Explore the science of living things and what happens to them after they pass with hands-on activities led by UNSM's education team, including:
- Whalefall —Did you know that when a whale dies, it’s body can become the seed for a whole new ecosystem in the darkest depths of the ocean? The attached graphic is based on a 3-d scan of a whalefall off the coast of California. (There will be an interactable, 5-foot long version of it for the activity that day.)
- Fungi —Learn about how fungi, using their hidden mycelial network, help to break down organic material, making them useful again for plants and animals.
- Tooth Decay — Learn about the invisible film of microbes that can cover your teeth, causing them to decay, and what you can do to combat it.
- Dung Beetles —Learn about the amazing insects that help break apart animal feces, recycling organic materials and keeping our prairies healthy.
